IEEE Learning Technology Standards Committee (LTSC)

ANNOUNCEMENT: IEEE LTSC Annual Meeting

The Annual IEEE LTSC Meeting will be held March 22, 2010 through March 24, 2010 in Orlando, FL. in conjunction with The ELearning Guild’s Learning Solutions Conference & Expo. All those attending this meeting should seriously consider attending our host’s conference. This conference offers a great opportunity to listen to and interact with a large number of people who ultimately use LTSC standards, as well as to see what people are doing and thinking about in the eLearning community. For conference and housing information please visit http://www.learningsolutionsmag.com/content/1420/learning-solutions-conference-2010-home

For more information on the Annual Meeting please refer to the Agenda.

Creating Learning Technology Standards

Participate Today!

The IEEE Learning Technology Standards Committee (LTSC) is chartered by the IEEE Computer Society Standards Activity Board to develop internationally accredited technical standards, recommended practices, and guides for learning technology.

The IEEE LTSC follows an open and transparent, formal standards development process.

The IEEE LTSC coordinates with other organizations, both formally and informally, that produce specifications and standards for learning technologies.

The IEEE LTSC is governed by a Sponsor Executive Committee (SEC) consisting of working group chairs and elected officers.

Membership is required to view Working Group and Study Group documents and post to email lists, and to vote on draft standards and participate in ballot resolution. Individuals interested in participating are encouraged to contact the relevant Working Group and Study Group chairs and explore the Working Groups and Study Groups portion Web site before becoming a member.

Accredited Learning Technology Standards

IEEE LTSC has developed a number of internationally accredited standards.

Published standards include:

  • 1484.1-2003 IEEE Standard for Learning Technology-Learning Technology Systems Architecture (LTSA)
  • 1484.11.1-2004 IEEE Standard for Learning Technology-Data Model for Content to Learning Management System Communication
  • 1484.11.2-2003 IEEE Standard for Learning Technology-ECMAScript Application Programming Interface for Content to Runtime Services Communication
  • 1484.11.3-2005 IEEE Standard for Learning Technology-Extensible Markup Language (XML) Schema Binding for Data Model for Content Object Communication
  • 1484.12.1-2002 IEEE Standard for Learning Object Metadata
  • 1484.12.3 IEEE Standard for Learning Technology-Extensible Markup Language (XML) Schema Definition Language Binding for Learning Object Metadata

These standards are available for purchase from the IEEE.

IEEE LTSC Working Groups and Study Groups

Standards development is done by IEEE LTSC members and invited experts in working groups via a combination of face-to-face meetings, teleconferences, and via asynchronous communications (e.g., email).
